very sorry about the mess here!

Yes, My blog fell victim of an overzealous photographer – wanting to change the theme and not discovering that there was a version conflict until too late.

I’ll be rebuilding and updating design during this next month or so – until then you can still many examples of my work on my facebook page Photos by Martin.

Kate+Cameron Lairmont Manor Wedding

weddings lairmont manor bellingham washington

Weddings at Lairmont Manor, Bellingham

Kate and Cameron brought families from Oregon and the Mid-West to join them in their wedding commitment at Lairmont Manor, Bellingham, Washington. Their day started with typical Bellingham Bay overcast which later evaporated into a delightful Pacific Northwest sunny day. Bright sky and moderately warm temperatures.

When families unite for a wedding I’m always in wonder – the wonder always seems to come in the form of how well the couple reflects the personalities of the families.  Shouldn’t be a surprise, but there it is.

Kate and Cameron had a great day that included some of my very favorite vendors. A Taste of Elegence – catering / A New Leaf – floral / La Vien Rose – cake / Rick Todd – Pastor, officiant / and of course Lairmont Manor. All of these professional have years of experience and provide a high level of service.

Onto the moments:

Spring Wedding & Portrait Salon Print Exhibit

Photos by Martin Exhibit at Keith Cox Autobahn

Keith Cox waiting room displaying Photos by Martin

When you think of photo exhibits, . . . Most people do not think of a car dealer/service center as a logical place to display art, craft, and portraiture. But alas, Keith Cox Autobahn is not your normal car dealer or service center. Keith, at least in my dealings, has always been straight forward, honest and admittedly a salesman. He is also exhibiting his commitment to his clients and their success as well. Keith Cox Autobahn is currently exhibiting glass sculpture, my portraits and wedding photography and Keith’s collection of vintage VW Bug memorabilia. Including images of Keith’s first ‘bug’.

The difference between his style of selling is that he lets you know in no uncertain terms what he’s able to do for you and then provides it in a timely fashion. At one point in my dealing with him, . . . I had commented that I appreciated that there was no one hiding behind a curtain. His reply, . . . ‘It doesn’t take a lot effort to provide better service than the current practices of car dealing’.  A simple statement that reflects a great deal of thought. The curtain is gone, all policies are spelled out on the website, and he’s always there to answer questions. – He’s also great at follow-up.

Keith, his family and friends represent some of Whatcom Counties most successful entrepreneurs. Keith and Bruce obviously are changing the way auto dealing is done in Bellingham. Neither are franchise dealers of the brands they sell, but, perhaps, it could be argued, they’re doing it as well as the Iowa Street brands, if not better.

Photos by Martins‘ history in Whatcom County crosses Keith’s paths. It’s likely and likely yours has as well. When I lived in the Columbia Neighborhood my family would frequent the Fountain Bakery on Saturday mornings. Keith would be back at the grill making breakfast for us. Much later, as the Presentation/Photo Editor of the Bellingham Herald, I would dispatch photographers to Homestead. As it turns out, Keith was coming out of academia to help with the initial success of the Lynden development. One of the images in the display is made at the ninth hole of the golf course. Most recently, my wife Carolyn, needed a car. A lover of VW Bugs, she was drawn to Keith Cox Autobhans’ first location. She was impressed with Keith’s straight forward sales techniques. She bought her car shortly there after, . . . I, in turn after enjoying the way Keith does business returned to purchase my current VW.

The short of it all, . . . Keith Cox Autobahn is a great place to purchase a lightly-used VW as well a good place to get any VW serviced. Keith Cox Autobahn is located at 1814 Ellis Street, Bellingham, WA. This section of Ellis Street is on the South-side of Bellingham High School just off of Ohio Street, between the Bellingham Food Bank and Wiztronics.

Easter, In This Place, Here and Now

Easter, Old Truths and Some of Our New Ones . . .

There are so many different ways to celebrate, relish, and remember, . . .

Our Savior was risen from, as promised, the tomb. Disciples accepted, Mary, simply had to have the truth from the source. All is well, again as promised. Faith, believing and accepting are the actual foundations.

We’re reminded of the truths of mortality as we mature. As a teen there is simply no way we’re going to die.  Just look at the cars left in my wake, . . . Today a year ago my sisters’ husband dropped dead while her family and her eldest sons’ family were on a Mexican vacation. I take pause to only imagine what this day is like for my sister, nephew, his wife, his daughter and my niece. Our mortality, our families mortality is a truth – do we challenge it or embrace the path to its unyielding conclusion?

This is our first Easter with my Mother-in-Law in an adult care home. Just three weeks ago she had fallen and broken her arm.  Just another insult to the crushing reason for her residence there. My mother is recovering from a nasty fall which found her being flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle just two weeks ago this Sunday.

The emotions run deep. Our responses at these moments, at times, at odds with each other remind us of who we have become.  Despite the differences, or maybe because of them, the tender moments rise to demonstrate the faithful path we embrace during this life we live. Our own paths to accepting, believing and practicing our faith continue. Accepting, embracing, loving each other along the way.

My Brother kissing my Mom goodbye as my Sister continues Mom's lifelong passtime

My Brother kissing my Mom goodbye as my Sister continues Mom's lifelong pastime

Mom is back at home with Dad. Dad the primary caregiver. We’re all watching how she gets around now. A new change for our Mother. A new challenge for us – to think that Mom really does need help. My sister is reminded of her husband almost daily. My Mother-in-Law, . . .

For multiple years my 17 year old was driven to soccer in the Skagit Valley by his Grandmother, my Mother-in-Law. When asked what he talked about with Grandma, his reply was simply, ‘I fell asleep’. With my Mother-in-Laws new life challenges, questions are sometimes difficult. We’ve learned that yes or no questions are the best. There’s one question that she continues to have quick, positive answers. Should he bring the guitar?  Easter Sunday, he brought the guitar and played for his Grandmother. Sweet songs, Beatles, ‘Black Bird’, improvised sweet finger picking, Jimi Hendrix played, slowly and sweetly. Whatever came to him. His mother and I relished in the moment. My Mother-in-Law, lay peacefully.

With the sweet tones coming from his guitar, this Easter Sunday, life made a full circle. My 17 year old played the guitar – his Grandmother fell asleep. My Son only smiled when I pointed out the turn-about.

It’s Here! “Stay Awhile With Me” Cabin Fever NW

IMG_6542

It’s here. What a treat to get to see how the images made by Photos by Martin, Yours Truly, are being used. Throughout the entire CD packaging, the images adorn.

Enough about the photos – yes, they look good but you really need to listen to Dianne and Tara’s music. There are cuts on this CD that reach inside and touch the heart.

IMG_6538

“I’m Gone” has turns of lyrics that will conjure the feel of wind in your hair and empowered emotions. “Night Song” is a wonderful good-night lullaby that just makes you want to close your eyes and rest. While your eyes are closed, revel in the magic of Tara and Dianne’s harmonies. Just possibly the best on the entire collection.  “Mountain Modal”, for some is simply a melancholy love song of stolen love – to others the words become art, in that, they can be interrupted in multiple ways. There are thirteen songs on the CD, all worth listening to, but the combination of simple lyrics, harmonies and the absolute magic of James Mason’s violin work on ‘Keep to the Stars’, . . . just has me listening to this one over and over.

IMG_6540

Never having had the privilege of accessing a recording session where studio musicians conspire to lift performance art to another level – Mr. Mason had no music, He had the lyrics, and listened to Dianne sing the song though as a solo. He warmed up – the digital feed turned on and halfway through the intro guitar he enters briefly enters – then the word, ‘cry’ is sung and the tone and ‘hesitating voice’ of the violin almost embraces the word. He goes on to create a third voice is what is normally a duet – sweet, sweet stuff. What a gift to be allowed to bring my camera into this intimate setting so that I could capture these moments for Cabin Fever NW. I think that is one of the reasons I became a wedding and portrait photographer, getting to step inside these special occasions and events is an amazing privilege.

The Skagit Valley – Exercises in Composition

IMG_6078-Edit

Spring starts this weekend and nothing marks the equinox quite like the Skagit Valley flat land. It amazes me every time I visit. The mornings are especially magical. The low light, trying to create silhouettes but unable to because of the huge umbrella lighting effect of an absolutely open horizon. There the warm light of the sun and the cool bounce light from the atmosphere, . . . hot, cold and then all those flowers blossoms.

Today’s images are not about early morning scenes, they’re simple exercises in composition. I’m also challenging myself to creating images when you’re not supposed to make images – during the middle of the day . . . As a Northwest portrait and wedding photographer, Photos by Martin, I’m always on the lookout for unusual and compelling backgrounds for upcoming photography sessions.

There’s a new hotel slated to arise from the soon-to-be ruins of a former mill storage facility. Then there’s the exercise of making the same look, . . . well, well-composed. The trees have been photographed a million times by better and more famous folk than yours truly, the barn is a winter look at a spring event, – Old fashion ‘printing techniques’ used to create the bright vibrant contrasts and dynamic ranges (print days we called it mid-tones) all old fashioned techniques made possible by Adobe. I must say without the cost and maybe without the heavy metals. Although it’d be interesting to compare the differences between old cameras the lab chemicals to the current day labs, digital cameras, memory and computer footprint, . . .

Mardi Gras, Close Upon Us – Lent to Follow

I’m not going to try and bore you with knowledge you already know. But, . . . No matter what you call it – the common vernacular is French – Mardi Gras. Translated to common English American, that would be Fat Tuesday. Translated to the old English / Anglican it would be Shrove Tuesday.

At any rate this is the time when we Christian’s celebrate the passing of Epiphany with another excuse to over indulge, . . . Let’s see, there’s Christmas, Easter, Supper Bowl, and Fat Tuesday. And then we become penitent. It’s a practice that dates back to the Celtic monks in Ireland sometime in the 6th Century. Most churches don’t follow the old ritual disciplines and confessions but rather choose to abstain from one or more of our many modern conveniences, for the Lenten Season. Sometimes the penance is in the form of sacrifice, perhaps tithing additionally or for some raising their giving to traditional levels of tithing. Doing without something and/or giving it to those in greater need. Some choose to only eat once every 24 hours, . . . break – fast.

As part of Christ the Servant Lutheran Church’s Lenten season, over 40 parishioners have written devotional passages. One for each of the 40 days of Lent. This project was suggested and compiled by Deaconess April Boyden.  At her request, Photos by Martin was asked to illustrate the six weeks that have been themed by Pastor Eric Finsand. Each of the themes are paired with the images submitted for consideration.

To stop and think about what I do as a visual tool to communicate what God, Christ and the Holy Ghost present as my ability to be a creative crafts-person has been an exercise in devotion, contemplation and blessing. Thank you April and Peace. m.
